Penja white pepper is harvested when it has ripened in the Moungo region (Cameroon) and then dried in the sun. All stages of production (harvesting, wetting, washing, drying, sorting) are carried out entirely by hand, mainly by the experienced hands of the local women of the village. Penja pepper has gained worldwide culinary fame. In 2014, it became the first product of the African continent to obtain the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). The volcanic soils of Penja give the white pepper fresh aromas of menthol and camphor.
