This limited edition whiskey was also aged in apple brandy casks and bottled in 2020 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Masataka and Rita’s wedding in 1920. With a subtle apple aroma, a beautiful harmony and sweetness and authentic characteristics of Yoichi single malt emerge, such as rich malt flavors, soft peat notes and tobacco.
The Japanese art that goes by the name Nikka whiskey is the “child” of Masataka Taketsuru, the first man to create Japanese whiskey. With extensive experience in the distillation of Scotch malt, in 1933 he opened his own distillery with the aim of creating his own premium Japanese whiskey. Today, Nikka Japanese whiskeys have 2 distilleries, one in Hokkaido (Yoici Distillery) and one in Miyagi (Miyagikyo/Sendai Distillery). Yoichi is the last distillery in Japan that uses coal heating, something that helps to preserve the traditional character of the spirit. On the other hand, in Miyagikyo, lighter and fruitier whisky is produced, similar to those of the Lowlands of Scotland. It is noteworthy that here they mix malt whisky with grain whisky, a process that very few distilleries in Scotland do.
